White linen, fresh flowers, assured presentation and attentive service make for a classic dining experience at the award-winning Wife of Bath, a Wye restaurant with two AA Rosettes to its name. Built in 1760 and converted from the village doctor's timber-framed house over 30 years ago, the restaurant retains a homely, welcoming atmosphere. Its proximity to the Channel Tunnel terminal gives you a perfect excuse to stop off next time you're driving to France, but it's a good idea to book first. Start with seared foie gras on toasted brioche, served with a zingy rhubarb chutney and sauterne and vanilla syrup. Then tuck in to an outstanding pan-fried wild local sea bass fillet, with homemade linguine, chive velouté and pea purée. Puddings are pure inspiration, from traditional English brown bread ice-cream to chilled rosewater soufflé with apple and raspberry compote.
